What Goes Wrong With Shopify

Shopify is reliable. What's on top of it isn't always.

Shopify itself is a solid platform. The problems come from the apps installed on it, the customisations made to themes, the liquid code that hasn't been touched in three years, and the integrations that nobody quite understands anymore.

App conflicts killing checkout

You install a new review app and suddenly your checkout breaks. Or a payment app update silently conflicts with your upsell tool. These conflicts are invisible until they cost you real money.

Slow store, poor Core Web Vitals

Shopify questions, answered.

My app conflicts are causing chaos, can you fix them without breaking everything else? +

Yes, and this is one of our most common Shopify engagements. We systematically map which apps are conflicting, identify what is causing the issue (usually script load order, checkout extensions fighting each other, or theme overrides), and resolve it without removing functionality your store depends on. We test in staging first. Nothing goes live until we are confident it will not cause a new problem.

My Shopify store is really slow, can you improve it without a full redesign? +

Absolutely. Slow Shopify stores are almost always caused by too many app scripts loading on every page, unoptimised images, bloated theme JavaScript, and poor Liquid template structure. We audit the full render path, remove or defer scripts that do not need to load immediately, optimise the critical rendering path, and fix the Liquid logic. Most stores see significant improvement without touching the design at all. We never recommend a redesign to fix a performance problem.

We have a broken integration nobody can fix, the original developer is gone and there is no documentation. +

This is our speciality. We take over integrations with no documentation regularly. We map the data flows independently, tracing what the code does, what the API calls are, and what the business logic is supposed to achieve. We then document it, fix the issue, and leave you with proper documentation so you are never in this position again. We have never encountered an integration we could not diagnose and resolve.

Shopify does not do what we need out of the box, can you build custom features? +

Yes, and this is where we genuinely stand apart. We build private Shopify apps, custom checkout extensions using Shopify extensibility APIs, bespoke Liquid components, metafield-driven logic, and full custom storefronts. Common examples: custom B2B pricing tiers, trade account portals, product configurators, subscription logic beyond what Recharge provides, and complex discount or bundle mechanics. We scope every custom build commercially, if an existing app genuinely solves the problem, we will tell you. If building custom is the right call, we will deliver it properly.

We have had Shopify developers before and they always made things worse, how is this different? +

The most common cause of that experience is junior developers or generalists who understand Shopify at a surface level, they can make theme changes and install apps, but they do not understand how Shopify architecture actually works under the hood. We use senior engineers only. No juniors on any work. We also always build and test in a development environment before touching your live store, use version control on everything, and require written sign-off before deploying anything. You will have a named engineer who owns your account and a full record of everything done.

Can you take over our store without a handover from the previous developer? +

Yes, and it is the majority of our engagements. Most stores we take on have little or no documentation. We map the theme, the installed apps, the custom code, the integrations, and any third-party scripts independently. We document as we go. We do not need a handover from your previous team, we do the due diligence ourselves.

Do you push theme upgrades or rebuilds? +

Never. We work with what you have. If your theme is old and causing problems, we will tell you honestly, and then we will fix it within the existing theme rather than selling you a new one. We do not recommend rebuilds unless they are truly necessary. In 26 years, we have never been in a situation where we recommended a rebuild that was not genuinely required.

We are on Shopify Plus, do you support Plus-specific features? +

Yes. We support the full Shopify Plus capability, checkout extensibility (the new Checkout UI Extensions replacing Scripts), Shopify Functions, B2B wholesale, multi-store configurations, custom storefronts via the Storefront API and Hydrogen, and Flow automation. Shopify Plus has significant additional complexity when fully utilised, we have engineers who work at that level.

We installed an app and now our checkout is broken, what do we do? +

Contact us immediately, this is a P1 critical issue. If you are a retainer client, a developer will be allocated within 1 hour. If you are not yet a client, contact us and we will assess the situation quickly. The typical fix is to identify which app is causing the conflict, isolate it, and either resolve the conflict or replace the app functionality. We have fixed hundreds of checkout issues, we know exactly where to look.

What is the difference between your support and what Shopify support offers? +

Shopify support covers the Shopify platform itself, their infrastructure, admin functionality, and core features. They do not support your custom theme code, the apps installed on your store, your integrations, or the bespoke functionality a developer has built. The vast majority of real problems Shopify merchants face fall outside what Shopify support will help with. That is the gap we fill, senior engineers who understand your specific store, respond fast, and fix the actual problem rather than asking you to uninstall all your apps and try again.
